METALLICA's HETFIELD: Rehab Was One Of The Scariest Experiences Of My Life
May 6, 2003METALLICA vocalist/guitarist James Hetfield recently told Launch that entering rehab to seek treatment for alcohol abuse was one of the scariest times in his life. "I was just kind of really scared," Hetfied said. "I was dropped off into this place and at that point my family was in question. Basically the family had split up, or I was no longer in the house, and it was totally one of the most scary times in my life. It was really like the earth was shaking under me, there was no stability, it felt like a constant earthquake. I had no idea what I was doing, where I was going."
"[In rehab] they pretty much check you in," Hetfield added. "It's not really like a prison. But they take away all the stuff that, that, you know. You're on detox or suicide watch or whatever it is. They take away all your razor blades and all your kind of typical stuff. There's no wire hangers in there, they're all plastic. I mean if I wanted to kill myself I'm sure I could find a few ways, but I wasn't about to do that."
METALLICA's eighth studio album, "St. Anger", is due on June 10 through Elektra Records.
